The main difference between edge and cloud is where they’re located: The “edge” refers to devices on the edges (or borders) of networks–such as smartphones, IoT devices, gateways etc.–while “cloud” implies centralized servers that store data in an offsite location accessible over the internet via secure access points like VPNs or Firewalls.

Edge computing is the next step in the evolution of cloud computing. It allows for more flexible and responsive applications, reduces latency, improves security and privacy by keeping data at the edge of networks rather than sending it over long distances.
